Since I am experiencing preterm labor and I am on bed rest since my 28 weeks, my OB suggested that I should have steroid shots, 1 dose for every 12 hours for two days, to speed up the development of my baby’s lungs. I admit that when I heard the word steroid, I worry about the side effects or risks that come with it. It’s not that I don’t trust my doctor, it’s just that I didn’t have the shots on my first born. So I did my research online on the pros and cons of this and here’s what I found at babycenter.com
“Steroids help speed up the development of your baby’s lungs and some other organs, which greatly increases his chances of survival. The babies whose moms received this treatment were also much less likely to suffer respiratory distress syndrome and bleeding in the brain. Corticosteroids appear safe for moms in the long term, and with few exceptions, the benefits are thought to outweigh any possible problems.“
I am ready to take the shots starting tomorrow and won’t worry about the cons. If it would benefit my baby, I would not have second thoughts. Though I know the anesthesia I would be taking on my CS operation on November would add up to my being forgetful, I don’t worry much. I guess I just have to save up for some memory foam mattress instead.
